What Makes Texas Wesleyan Different?

Personal relationships matter here. Texas Wesleyan faculty and staff will know your name, your strengths and what motivates you. With small classes and instructors who still work in clinical practice, you get individual attention from people who truly understand your career.

Learn clinical skills that count. We focus on what you’ll actually use in practice, like reading X-rays and EKGs, suturing, abscess drainage, bone casting and more. These skills give you true clinical autonomy and help you step into any care setting with confidence, from busy urban clinics to rural counties.

Practice holistic care to treat the person behind the patient. You’ll develop skills to create treatment plans that consider the social, emotional and environmental factors that shape their health. We also bring in experts to teach specialized topics that help you make a broader impact in the lives of patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

A family nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced education and training who is certified to make independent clinical decisions. An FNP can diagnose conditions, prescribe medications and create treatment plans without waiting for approval.

FNPs provide care to patients of all ages, from newborns to seniors. They use relationship-centered, holistic care and a broad scope of practice that is relevant to individuals, families and communities.

As an FNP, you can work in settings such as private clinics, urgent care centers, hospitals, community health centers, telehealth platforms and more. Some FNPs even go on to open their own practices.

To become an FNP, nurses must complete graduate-level education such as an MSN in family nurse practitioner program, fulfill clinical practicum hours, pass a national FNP board certification exam and obtain advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) licensure in their state.

The Master of Science in Nursing - Family Nurse Practitioner (MSN-FNP) focuses specifically on clinical practice as a family nurse practitioner, preparing you to diagnose conditions, prescribe medications and provide primary care. You can complete the MSN-FNP in as little as two years.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice - Family Nurse Practitioner (DNP-FNP) includes the same clinical preparation as an MSN-FNP, but adds doctoral-level coursework in healthcare policy, evidence-based practice, leadership and systems change. You can complete the DNP-FNP in as little as three years.

We’re happy to tell you more about the differences and help you decide which is the best fit for your plans. Call 817-785-9307 or email nursingpractice@txwes.edu to schedule a time to talk.

To apply for the MSN-FNP program, you need:

  • Unencumbered RN license in the state where you’ll complete clinical hours
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in upper-level nursing courses with a 2.8 GPA overall (if your GPA is below 2.8, call us at 817-785-9307 to explore pathways to admission)

When you apply, you’ll submit a resume, three professional or academic references and official transcripts. You’ll also complete a virtual interview.

Visit our admissions page for complete application details and to start your application process.

An MSN-FNP fundamentally changes your nursing practice. With FNP certification, you gain the authority to lead care decisions and manage treatment plans. Instead of paging physicians for medication orders, you write the prescriptions. When a patient needs a diagnosis, you’re the one making it based on your evidence-based assessment and expert clinical judgment.

You can choose your setting based on where you want to make an impact: a small-town clinic where you become part of the community, an urgent care center with varied cases, telehealth work that lets you practice from anywhere or you could even open your own practice.

Some FNPs end up serving as the primary healthcare provider for entire rural areas. Others focus on specific patient populations they’re passionate about. Since our program also covers the business aspects of healthcare, you’ll have a strong understanding of how practices actually operate and how clinical decisions get made.
